MY WINDOW CLEANING TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES

On its surface, it might seem like there is little to know about window cleaning and that anyone could just pick up a bucket and squeegee and pass as a professional window cleaner. Yet, most people will never do that, and even janitorial staff and house cleaners are baffled about how professional window cleaners achieve the highly detailed results they are known for.
In truth, a professional window cleaner must do years of bad window cleaning before they have the skills to efficiently clean windows to the point that they seem to have no glass in them at all, and shine like mirrors in the sun. There is far more to window cleaning than a reasonable person will notice. After 8 years of window cleaning, my window cleaning knowledge and skills deepen with every  window clean I do.
When I clean your windows, I use a wide range of tools and techniques where appropriate. Most of these things will be unnoticed by the casual onlooker, but without them I wouldn't achieve the excellent results that I do! I use traditional window squeegee and mop techniques as well as modern water-fed pole system techniques, ladder work, razor blades and scrub pads.
  • Traditional Squeegee Techniques: You’ll notice my squeegees look very different from the one you might own, and that I carry several of them for different purposes. I also use a T-shaped scrubbing tool window cleaners call a “mop.” Most of my tools are kept strapped to a worn tool harness to reduce wasted movement. These professional-grade tools have been engineered to allow a skilled window cleaner to do things that wouldn’t typically work for a less specialized cleaner.
  • Modern Water-Fed Pole System: Where appropriate, I use a water-fed pole system to clean your exterior windows. This system connects to your town water tap. The special filter converts town water into pure-water—absolutely clean water that is unsafe to drink because it absorbs any minerals it comes into contact with. This pure water is sprayed onto your window, where a non-scratch brush is used to loosen anything stuck to it so it can be rinsed off with more pure-water. The runoff becomes impure again by the time it reaches the ground, where it will not harm animals, and plants will thrive on it. The system uses no more water than watering a garden does. However, it cannot be used on varnished wooden surfaces, as pure-water has been known to dull wood varnish and fresh paint systems. It is normal for me to use pure-water in other cleaning contexts, such as louvre and screen cleaning.
  • Ladders: I only use industrial-rated A-frame, extension, and combination ladders rated for at least 150 kg. You will also see me using straps, ladder levelers, ladder “bullhorns,” and ladder chocks to secure ladders against slipping. I also use a roofer’s harness when necessary.
  • Razor Blades and Scrub Pads: Sometimes, it is industry standard to use razor blades and non-abrasive scrubbers to remove stubborn ingrained soils and construction debris that have not already sunk into the glass surface.
